Understanding Deaf Cultural Trauma & How It Affects Your Work

October 19, 2021 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm CDT

This webinar is intended for hearing interpreters and ASL students.

The Deaf Community has a long history of challenges, especially those that conflict with a Deaf person’s basic needs. The shared cultural trauma has directly affected how hearing people experience and support the Deaf Community. One way to contribute to the healing of this cultural trauma is by building stronger hearing allies. Genuine hearing allies create better leaders, stronger businesses, a happier community, and more fulfilling careers. During this training, we will dive into the different aspects of cultural trauma, define hearing guilt, and identify microaggressions and triggers when it comes to the Deaf Community.

Topics covered will include:

  • History of Deaf People
  • Defining cultural trauma
  • Defining triggers
  • Understanding microaggression
  • Understanding the impact of allyship

If you have questions about the registration process, email your questions to dhhs.webinar@hhs.texas.gov.

*Participants may earn 0.2 DHHS Ethics CEUs by attending a full session, and taking a post-test (in GoToWebinar system). CEUs may not be earned by calling in via phone only.
