SUMMARY:Transcending Hearing Guilt: Engaging With Compassion
DESCRIPTION:As people become more aware of how the system is designed to lift or block certain groups of people\, senses of confusion\, guilt\, or shame can creep in. How do we build deeper cross-cultural alliances in a world of uncertainty and stress? \nOutside of intersectional issues (i.e. racism\, sexism\, etc.)\, audism and linguicism are common forms of oppression within the Deaf\nCommunity. Hearing guilt can emerge when a hearing person feels lost on how to move forward with Deaf and hard of hearing\npeople. \nWith this webinar\, hearing people can begin to transcend hearing guilt and figure out how to engage in the community in healthy ways. Participants will gain a birds-eye view of oppression and the difference between guilt and shame. This foundation leads to a meaningful application of a leadership framework and power dynamics. Each participant will have the opportunity to develop a unique plan to move forward with confidence and compassion. \nCEUs: 0.3 PS (PPO)\nCost: $339 per person (conference package)\nRegister: https://zaboosh.com/pages/conference-schedule-b

SUMMARY:Understanding Deaf Cultural Trauma & How It Affects Your Work
DESCRIPTION:The Deaf Community has a long history of challenges\, especially those that conflict with a Deaf person’s basic needs. The shared cultural trauma has directly affected how hearing people experience and support the Deaf Community. \nOne way to contribute to the healing of this cultural trauma is by building stronger hearing allies. Genuine hearing allies create better leaders\, more substantial businesses\, a happier community\, and more fulfilling careers. During this training\, we will dive into the different aspects of cultural trauma\, define hearing guilt\, and identify microaggressions and triggers when it comes to the Deaf Community. \n\n\nEducational Objectives: \nParticipants will be able to: \n\nExplain the historical context of audism and describe how and why they are maintained.\nDefine cultural trauma.\nList three effects of cultural trauma.\nList three ways on how to be more effective in their work with the Deaf Community.\n\nCEUs\n0.3 PPO \nASLIS is an Approved RID CMP Sponsor for Continuing Education Activities. This Professional Studies program is offered for a total of 0.3 CEUs at Some Content Knowledge Level.

SUMMARY:Understanding Deaf Cultural Trauma: How It Affects Our Work
DESCRIPTION:Deaf people experience cultural trauma in physical\, emotional\, and mental ways that we may not yet comprehend. Hearing individuals are often unaware of how audism\, or prejudice against the Deaf\, affects productivity and economic prosperity. \nJun 23\, 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM EDT\nZoom\n.2 PPO CEUs (RID/BEI)\nHosted by C Wood\nDownload flyer here \nLonger Event Description\nAudism\, or prejudice against hearing differences\, has deeply affected the Deaf community for\ndecades. Deaf people were once considered the finest editors in town\, assistants to rules\, and the\nmajority of instructors at Deaf schools. This all came crashing down in the 1880s when they were\nframed as incapable by a deficit ideology – which contributed greatly to their isolation from society.\nSign language was banned and language deprivation increased. \nDeaf people have experienced a lot of suffering and trauma\, whether it is directly or indirectly\ncaused by shared experiences. The collective experience is also known as cultural trauma. Cultural\ntrauma can be experienced in different ways. However\, the unique impact on the Deaf community\nas well as the rest of the world is often overlooked. Have you ever wondered why Deaf people are\nstereotyped as those who often overshare\, react angrily\, or rely heavily on government programs? \nThe effects of these events can be reduced when we take action to recognize the community’s\nshared historical experiences and our part in the bigger picture. As a professional in the Deaf\ncommunity\, your position is more vital than ever. Identifying and preventing triggers is a critical\nleadership skill. You’ll discover how to utilize tactics like microaffirmations and holding space to aid in group healing and breaking down systematic barriers. Finally\, you’ll learn how crucial self-\ncare is not just for your own well-being but also for the community members you serve.
